Standard vs Wide Dog Collars: Which One Is Right for Your Dog?

Standard vs Wide Dog Collars: Which One Is Right for Your Dog?

Choosing a dog collar sounds simple until you realise there are a few things to think about: size, width, comfort, strength, style and how your dog actually behaves on walks.

Some dogs are calm little wanderers who trot along happily beside you. Others are strong, excited, curious or determined to sniff every single thing in sight. The right collar can make everyday walks feel more comfortable, secure and enjoyable for both of you.

At Lost In Hound, our Combat Collars come in two widths: Standard 2.5cm and Wide 3.8cm. Both are designed for real daily walks, but the best choice depends on your dog’s size, build and walking needs.

Here’s how to choose the right one.

Why collar width matters

Collar width is not just about how a collar looks. It can also affect how it feels on your dog.

A narrower collar can be a great option for smaller dogs, lighter breeds and dogs with shorter necks. It sits neatly, feels less bulky and is easy for everyday wear.

A wider collar can feel more balanced on larger dogs, stronger breeds or dogs with broader necks. Because the collar covers a little more surface area, many owners prefer a wider style for bigger dogs who need something that feels sturdy and secure.

The aim is always the same: a collar that fits well, feels comfortable and gives you confidence when you head out for a walk.

Standard 2.5cm collars

Our Combat Collar - 2.5cm is recommended for small to medium dogs.

This width is ideal if you want something practical, lightweight and easy for everyday walks. It is a good choice for dogs who do not need a wider collar, as well as breeds with smaller frames or more delicate necks.

Our small and medium collars adjust from 350mm to 480mm, making them suitable for many small and medium breeds.

They can work well for breeds such as Dachshunds, Jack Russells, French Bulldogs, Cocker Spaniels, Border Collies and similar-sized dogs. Of course, breed examples are only a guide, so measuring your dog’s neck is always the most accurate way to choose.

A standard collar is a lovely everyday choice if you want something secure, comfortable and stylish without feeling too heavy.

Wide 3.8cm collars

Our Combat Collar - 3.8cm is recommended for large to extra large dogs.

A wider collar can be a better fit for dogs with bigger frames, stronger builds or broader necks. It has a more substantial feel and can give larger dogs a balanced, secure walking setup.

Our large and extra large collars adjust from 430mm to 630mm, making them suitable for many larger breeds.

They can work well for dogs such as Labradors, German Shepherds, Rottweilers, Cane Corsos, Mastiffs, Anatolian Shepherds and similar-sized breeds.

If your dog is strong, powerful or simply needs a collar that looks and feels more in proportion, the wide option is likely to be the better choice.

How to measure your dog for a collar

The best way to choose the right size is to measure your dog’s neck.

Use a flexible tape measure and place it around the base of your dog’s neck, where their collar naturally sits. Make sure the tape is not too tight.

A good rule is to allow enough space for two fingers between the tape and your dog’s neck. This helps make sure the collar will feel secure without being uncomfortable.

Once you have your measurement, match it to the adjustable length range:

Size Adjustable Length Width Recommended Collar
Small 350mm to 480mm 2.5cm Combat Collar - 2.5cm
Medium 350mm to 480mm 2.5cm Combat Collar - 2.5cm
Large 430mm to 630mm 3.8cm Combat Collar - 3.8cm
Extra Large 430mm to 630mm 3.8cm Combat Collar - 3.8cm

If your dog is between sizes, we recommend sizing up for comfort.

Think about your dog’s build, not just their breed

Breed guides are useful, but every dog is different.

One Labrador may have a thick neck and strong build, while another may be smaller and lighter. A French Bulldog may need a different fit to a Jack Russell, even if they both fall into the small dog category.

That is why measuring is so important. It helps you choose based on your actual dog, rather than guessing from breed alone.

You can also use our size guide to search by breed or enter your dog’s neck measurement in millimetres for a recommendation. It is there to help, but measuring your dog is still the best way to get the most accurate fit.

Pairing your collar with the right lead

Once you have chosen the right collar, it is worth pairing it with a lead that feels just as dependable.

Our Combat Lead is 1.26m long and 3cm wide, making it suitable for small to extra large breeds. It pairs perfectly with both collar widths, so you can create a matching set that looks put together and feels practical for daily walks.

A good lead should feel comfortable in your hand, secure on walks and easy to use whether you are heading around the block, into town, through the park or out on a weekend adventure.

Comfort and confidence on every walk

The right collar should not be something you have to think about every time you leave the house. It should simply do its job well.

It should fit securely, feel comfortable for your dog and suit the way you walk together. For some dogs, that will be the standard 2.5cm collar. For others, the wide 3.8cm collar will be the better match.

If you have a small or medium dog, the standard collar is likely to be the best choice. If you have a large, extra large or stronger dog, the wide collar may give you the sturdy, balanced feel you are looking for.

Finding your dog’s perfect fit

Choosing between a standard and wide dog collar does not need to be complicated.

Start by measuring your dog’s neck, check the adjustable size range, then think about your dog’s build and walking style.

A well-fitting collar can make everyday walks feel calmer, safer and more comfortable, while still looking stylish too.

Whether your dog is a gentle pavement stroller, a countryside explorer or a determined sniffing professional, the right collar and lead set helps make every walk feel that little bit better.
